As part of addressing the “floating cottages” woes in the town of Cordova, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia is set to meet operators and those living near the docking sites to address this prevailing problem, in an effort to save the town’s tourism image and align with the industry’s recovery journey.

This developed as Garcia has prohibited further construction of illegal structures, such as floating and fixed cottages, within the foreshore area, mangrove zone, public beach zone, and municipal fishing zones of the town with an order to cease and desist effective immediately.

In her Executive Order 19 issued on August 9, 2022, the governor also barred the owners and/or operators of pump boats and other similar sea vessels from transporting construction materials to the said areas.

According to Sugbo News, the official Facebook page of the Cebu Provincial government said that Garcia has stepped in and issued the order following her meetings with various concerned agencies at the Capitol to address what is turning out to be a serious environmental concern in Cordova town due to the mushrooming of floating cottages there that have been operating without a permit and proper regulations.

The governor called on key agencies to collaborate to help Cordova save its tourism industry from what she described as a “marine disaster in waiting.”

“We need your help and Marina (Maritime Industry Authority). This is a time that we all collaborate forces because we are trying to preserve the waters of Cordova so it can continue to be a tourist destination. The way this is going in about a matter of time, this will practically be killing the goose that lays the golden egg. This is also a marine disaster waiting. If the fish are affected, wala na rin ang primary means of livelihood,” Gov. Gwen explained.

The governor’s intervention comes after newly elected Cordova Mayor Cesar “Didoy” Suan sought her help on the unregulated floating and fixed cottages that have been mushrooming at the shores of Cordova.

Suan said that these cottages have already reached more than 300.
