MANILA, Philippines — A Quiapo Church official has said that fewer devotees may take part in this year’s Traslacion, the annual grand procession of the Black Nazarene, even as preparations continue and activities draw near.
Father Robert Arellano, spokesperson for the Nazareno 2026 festivities, emphasized that the effectiveness of prayer and devotion does not depend on the number of people physically present at the event. He noted that Filipino Catholics can participate spiritually from home or other parishes and still share in the celebration.
This perspective comes ahead of the highly anticipated Feast of the Black Nazarene activities, which include the traditional Traslacion procession from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church on January 9. Last year’s celebration drew millions of devotees, but the church official suggested that attendance patterns may vary as the event continues to evolve and devotees choose different ways to observe the feast.
Organizers continue to prepare the site and coordinate security and crowd management efforts, while also reminding the faithful that sincere prayer matters most, whether offered in person or remotely.
