MANILA, Philippines — More than 300 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) early Monday morning on a government-chartered flight from Saudi Arabia. The repatriation mission, coordinated by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), is part of an ongoing effort to assist distressed workers and those affected by the recent economic shifts in the Middle East.
The returnees included several workers who had been stranded due to labor disputes, expired visas, or the closure of their respective companies. Many expressed relief upon landing, having spent months in various shelters while awaiting their clearance and flight documents.
“We are committed to bringing home every Filipino who finds themselves in a difficult situation abroad,” a DMW official said during the arrival ceremony. “This flight is a testament to the government’s promise to prioritize the welfare of our modern-day heroes. Beyond the flight, we are providing them with immediate financial assistance and reintegration support.”
Upon arrival, the OFWs underwent a briefing where they were informed of the various services available to them, including:
- Immediate Financial Aid: Cash assistance to cover initial expenses and transportation to their home provinces.
- Livelihood Programs: Opportunities to apply for small business grants and skills training through the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
- Medical and Psychological Support: On-site check-ups and counseling for those who experienced trauma or health issues during their stay abroad.
The repatriation comes at a time of heightened global volatility, with the Philippine government monitoring the impact of rising energy costs and regional tensions on Filipino communities worldwide. Economic managers noted that the return of these workers adds to the domestic labor pool, prompting calls for faster implementation of local infrastructure and industrial projects to provide them with sustainable employment.
The DMW has indicated that more chartered flights are being scheduled in the coming weeks to accommodate other Filipinos currently in processing centers across the Middle East. Families of OFWs are encouraged to coordinate with the nearest OWWA regional office for updates on the status of their loved ones’ repatriation.
