Celebrated actress and UNICEF ambassadress Anne Curtis has publicly shared her dismay regarding the ongoing construction of a resort within the iconic Chocolate Hills in Bohol, an area recognized by UNESCO as the Philippines’ third National Geological Monument. Through a post on her X account, Curtis expressed her sadness over the construction’s proximity to the nation’s treasured natural landscapes, amplifying concerns about the potential impact on this protected site.

The controversy surrounding the resort, known as Captain’s Peak Resort, gained traction after a viral drone video showcased its amenities nestled amongst the Chocolate Hills, a geological wonder consisting of over 1,700 hills spread across the Bohol landscape. The video, shared by vlogger Ren The Adventurer, highlighted the resort’s swimming pools, water slides, and cottages, sparking widespread criticism from netizens and environmental advocates alike.

Echoing Senator Nancy Binay’s sentiments, Curtis called for accountability from government bodies like the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and local Bohol officials for permitting the construction and operation of such a facility within a protected area. The dialogue on social media platforms, including contributions from personalities like Atty. Chel Diokno and users expressing concerns over the environmental repercussions of the resort, underscores the broader debate over the conservation of natural heritage sites against the backdrop of development and tourism.

In response to the outcry, the DENR has issued a temporary closure order and a notice of violation against the resort, reaffirming the Chocolate Hills’ status under Proclamation No. 1037 as a site of scientific significance and high scenic value, warranting its protection.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing development with environmental preservation, a debate that continues to engage public figures, government agencies, and citizens alike in the quest for sustainable stewardship of natural wonders.
