Basilan is on the verge of being officially declared free from the presence of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), with authorities removing “wanted” posters and tarpaulins as part of the preparations.

The 101st Infantry Brigade announced that this declaration represents “a historic milestone,” highlighting the successful efforts to eliminate terrorism and radicalism in the province.

“This initiative is anticipated to encourage further regional development and investment, reinforcing the hard-won peace,” the Brigade stated.

The removal of the ASG “wanted” posters symbolizes the conclusion of a long-standing security campaign against the extremist group in Basilan, marking a significant step towards restoring normalcy and security in the province.

Although remnants of the ASG remain, they are now classified as “criminal elements” due to their continued involvement in illegal activities such as extortion and threats. However, the military emphasized that these elements “can no longer influence the community and are without a support system for survival.”
