Chantal Schmidt, a Cebuana law student and model, recently clinched the first runner-up position at the 2024 Miss Eco International pageant, held in Egypt. This accomplishment continues the Philippines’ impressive record of high placements in this prestigious competition, signaling the country’s ongoing prominence on the international pageant stage.
A Remarkable Journey to the Podium
The competition unfolded at the Triumph Luxury Hotel in New Cairo, where Schmidt vied against global contenders, securing her spot just behind Ukraine’s Angelina Usanova, the new Miss Eco International. Usanova took over the crown from Thanh Ha Nguyen of Vietnam, the 2023 titleholder.
Overcoming Challenges with Grace
Schmidt’s journey to the podium was fraught with challenges, notably a health scare that saw her rushed to the hospital for vomiting just days before the final event. Despite this setback, she not only participated in the competition but also excelled, earning accolades such as “Best in Evening Gown” during the preliminary events and “Best in National Costume” at the coronation ceremony.
A Legacy of Philippine Success in Miss Eco International
Schmidt’s achievement marks the third time a Filipina has been named first runner-up in the Miss Eco International pageant, following Maureen Montagne in 2019 and Kelley Day in 2021. The Philippines’ strong performance history began with Cynthia Thomalla, who captured the title in 2018, and continued with Kathleen Paton, who won in 2022. The pageant was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2023, the country’s delegate, Ashley Subijano Montenegro, reached the semifinals.
A Stepping Stone for Future Endeavors
The Miss Eco International pageant serves as a significant platform for its participants, focusing on environmental awareness and cultural appreciation. For Schmidt, this event was not just a competition but a showcase of her resilience and commitment to her advocacies, which are integral to the pageant’s ethos.
Schmidt’s Role in the Miss Philippines Legacy
Selected in February by Empire Philippines during a press event announcing global assignments for finalists of The Miss Philippines Culture and Heritage Celebration, Schmidt was the first queen from the Miss Philippines organization to compete internationally. Her participation in Miss Eco International paves the way for future representatives from the Philippines, including Alethea Ambrosio, set to compete in the Miss Supranational pageant, and others lined up for Miss Aura International and Miss Asia Pacific International contests.
The Miss Eco International 2024 concluded with a strong showing from other contestants, with Canada’s Nikita Dani as the second runner-up, Brazil’s Fabiane Goia in third, and Indonesia’s Valerie Avril in fourth place.
Chantal Schmidt’s remarkable performance at the Miss Eco International pageant is a testament to her dedication and the robust training and preparation she received. Her success not only highlights her personal achievements but also underscores the Philippines’ influential role in the international pageant scene, fostering a legacy of beauty, intelligence, and cultural ambassadorship.
