Stagnation and Decline in Living Standards

A recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) paints a concerning picture of the quality of life for most Filipinos. According to the survey, a significant portion of the population has experienced no change or a decline in their living standards over the past year. This stagnation and deterioration are highlighted by the survey’s findings, where only 28% reported an improvement in their quality of life, 30% experienced a decline, and 41% saw no change.

This data reflects a worrying trend in the Philippines, where economic pressures and challenges continue to impact the everyday lives of its citizens. The survey’s ‘Net Gainers’ score, sitting at -2, is indicative of a ‘fair’ state of affairs but underscores a negative trend. This is particularly pronounced among the poor and less educated segments of the population, who are disproportionately affected by economic hardships.

One of the critical factors contributing to this situation is the high inflation rate, which has severely affected food prices and transportation costs. In September, inflation rose to 6.1%, with food prices seeing a 9.7% year-on-year increase. This economic pressure is felt most acutely by the poor, with the bottom 30% of households experiencing a higher inflation rate of 6.9%.

The survey’s findings reveal a stark reality: that the economic growth and stability needed to improve the quality of life for Filipinos are still elusive. The poor, in particular, continue to face significant challenges, with fewer reporting improvements in their living conditions compared to more affluent groups. This divide highlights the need for targeted economic and social policies to address the disparities and support those most in need.
