ILOILO CITY, Philippines — The “City of Love” is inviting travelers to step back into the 19th century with the launch of the Living Heritage Museum Tour. Reported on Sunday, May 10, 2026, the initiative is a centerpiece of National Heritage Month, leveraging Iloilo’s prestigious status as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy to offer an immersive, multisensory journey through its colonial past.

The tour, which ran its pilot sessions from May 8 to 10, transforms the city’s storied ancestral houses and heritage buildings into “living stages” featuring period-accurate theater and traditional Ilonggo cuisine.

Spearheaded by the Iloilo City MICE Alliance, the tour covers up to ten iconic landmarks, some of which are opening their doors to the public for the very first time.

Iconic Stops on the Heritage Circuit:

  • Avanceña-Camiña Balay nga Bato: A grand “house of stone” where guests experience a traditional heritage lunch featuring its world-famous hot chocolate (tsokolate de batirol) and Molo soup.
  • Ynchausti-Elizalde Building: Now the Museum of Philippine Economic History, this restored landmark serves as the sophisticated backdrop for themed gala dinners.
  • Casa Mariquit: One of the oldest ancestral houses in the Jaro district, once home to the influential Lopez family, offering a glimpse into the opulent domestic life of the Spanish era.
  • Rosendo Mejica Museum: Dedicated to the “Father of Visayan Journalism,” this site preserves the printing press and literary works that defined the region’s intellectual history.
  • Casa Javelona-Ledesma: An architectural marvel showcasing intricate wood carvings and the spacious voladas characteristic of the Filipino-Spanish elite.

Unlike standard museum visits, the “Spanish Era Tour” emphasizes participation and atmosphere:

  1. Period Dressing: In a nod to Iloilo’s history as the “Textile Capital of the Philippines,” participants in the dinner packages engage in interactive costume photo sessions.
  2. Interactive Theater: Professional performers bring history to life through vignettes and the romantic tradition of the harana (serenade).
  3. Culinary Heritage: Menus are meticulously curated to reflect 19th-century Ilonggo flavors, bridging the gap between historical preservation and the city’s modern culinary acclaim.

The program offers three distinct tiers to accommodate different types of travelers:

  • Casual Daytime Explorations: Focused on architecture and history.
  • Formal Evening Galas: Featuring themed buffets and musical performances.
  • Price Range: Packages are priced between ₱2,200 and ₱4,500 per participant, inclusive of guided tours, souvenir kits, and meals.

Mayor Raisa Treñas emphasized that this initiative is more than a seasonal event. It is a strategic move to solidify Iloilo City’s reputation as a premier destination for heritage and convention tourism (MICE), with the city currently eyeing a bid to host the Philippine MICE Conference (MICECON) 2027.

As the streets of Iloilo echo with the rustle of gowns and the sounds of the past, the Living Heritage Museum Tour offers a chance to “step inside the frame of a living painting,” ensuring the soul of Ilonggo heritage remains vibrant for generations to come.
