Senator Imee Marcos revealed that some colleagues have encouraged her to seek the Senate presidency as the 20th Congress approaches.

In a statement, Marcos confirmed that fellow senators have proposed her candidacy, though she hasn’t shared her stance. She stressed that regardless of who takes the top post, reforms—especially in the budget process—are urgently needed.

She criticized the traditional secrecy of the bicameral conference committee on the national budget, calling for transparency and legislative prioritization in areas like food security, education, healthcare, and support for farmers and fishermen.

Marcos also rejected the Department of Budget and Management’s statement that President Marcos would observe the congressional budget process post-submission of the National Expenditure Program, calling it unconstitutional.

Additionally, she called for sweeping electoral and political party reforms, warning that parties are increasingly serving personal interests over public welfare. She emphasized the Senate’s role as an independent guardian of national interest.

Meanwhile, Senators Francis “Chiz” Escudero and Vicente “Tito” Sotto III are also being considered for the Senate presidency. Senator-elect Erwin Tulfo disclosed that both candidates sought meetings with him, but he plans to consult with his brother, Senator Raffy Tulfo, before making a decision. While Erwin ran with Sotto under the Marcos-backed Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas, Raffy has worked closely with Escudero.

Erwin Tulfo said he needs more time to assess which candidate can best unite the Senate and legislate effectively for the public.

Senators Bong Go and Panfilo “Ping” Lacson also confirmed that discussions around the next Senate leader are ongoing, with many senators reportedly favoring a leader who is independent, transparent, and capable.
