MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has taken a massive step toward energy independence following the discovery of a significant new gas field. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Monday that the Malampaya East 1 well has officially struck gas, a find capable of powering approximately 5.7 million households annually.
The discovery, located within the existing Service Contract 38 area off the coast of Palawan, is expected to breathe new life into the country’s energy sector. For years, the original Malampaya gas field has been in a state of natural decline, raising concerns about the long-term stability of the nation’s power supply. This new find is projected to offset that depletion and reduce the Philippines’ heavy reliance on expensive imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).
A Victory for Energy Security “This is a significant development that will bolster our energy security and provide much-needed relief to our power grid,” President Marcos said during the announcement. The President emphasized that the additional capacity will help stabilize electricity costs for millions of Filipino families and support the country’s growing industrial needs.
The Malampaya East 1 well is operated by the Prime Energy-led consortium. The successful drilling and discovery are the result of an aggressive exploration campaign initiated under the current administration’s push to harness local resources.
Economic and Environmental Impact Beyond household power, the discovery is expected to:
- Generate Substantial Revenue: The government is set to earn billions in royalties, which can be funneled into social services and infrastructure.
- Support Transition Goals: As a “cleaner” fossil fuel, natural gas remains a critical transition fuel for the Philippines as it gradually shifts toward a higher percentage of renewable energy in its power mix.
- Job Creation: The development and maintenance of the new field will create technical and high-value jobs for Filipinos in the energy sector.
Industry experts noted that the timing of the discovery is critical, as the Philippines faces increasing energy demands driven by post-pandemic economic recovery and a growing population. With the Malampaya East 1 field expected to be integrated into the national grid soon, the country looks forward to a more stable and self-reliant energy future.
