President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. expressed on Monday that he’s open to reconciling with the Duterte family, amid ongoing tensions between the two political camps.

In an interview with broadcaster Anthony Taberna, Marcos said he prefers unity over conflict, emphasizing that he already has enough political adversaries.
“I don’t want trouble. I want to get along with everyone. I already have many enemies—I don’t need more. I need friends,” Marcos said when asked if he’s still open to mending ties with the Dutertes.

Marcos stressed the importance of political stability and cooperation, even when there are policy disagreements.
“We don’t have to agree on everything. Just do your job, and let’s not stir up conflict. Let’s take out the chaos,” he added.

Relations between the Marcoses and Dutertes have soured since Eleksyon 2022, when Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte ran as allies. Tensions escalated when VP Duterte stepped down from her Cabinet post as Education Secretary, and when her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, publicly criticized Marcos Jr., calling him “bangag” (drug-addled) and power-hungry.

Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte also urged Marcos to resign, claiming he lacks a vision for the nation. First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos later voiced her disappointment with VP Duterte for allowing her father’s criticisms to go unchallenged.

The rift deepened following former President Duterte’s arrest by Philippine authorities for crimes against humanity. Marcos’ administration defended the move, stating it was in compliance with international obligations through Interpol.
