The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has warned that a significant eruption at Mount Kanlaon in Negros Island remains possible as the volcano continues to show increased activity. PHIVOLCS reiterated that the volcano is under Alert Level 2, indicating a state of heightened unrest.
PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol explained that the volcanic activity could still escalate, making an eruption similar to the one on June 3 a possibility. Phreatic or steam-driven eruptions are also likely to occur soon.
Bacolcol advised the public to avoid entering the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone around Kanlaon, as phreatic eruptions can happen without warning, even under lower alert levels.
Increased seismic activity was noted starting on September 9. Over a 24-hour period from September 20 to 21, PHIVOLCS recorded 45 volcanic earthquakes. Sulfur dioxide emissions from the crater are currently averaging 8,932 tonnes per day.
PHIVOLCS also recommended drinking plenty of water in case of sulfur inhalation and rinsing eyes with clean water if irritation occurs.
