President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has commenced a pivotal working visit in Berlin, aiming to fortify the long-standing bilateral ties between the Philippines and Germany. Upon the invitation of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the visit is set against the backdrop of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, showcasing a significant milestone in their international partnership.
With the Philippines and Germany preparing to celebrate seven decades of bilateral relations, this visit underscores the importance of reinforcing diplomatic and economic connections. Germany, which hosts over 35,000 Filipino workers, plays a crucial role in various sectors that are vital to the Philippines’ growth and development.
During his stay, President Marcos is scheduled to meet Chancellor Scholz, where they will sign several agreements, including a Joint Declaration of Intent on Strengthening Maritime Cooperation and a Cooperation Programme between the Philippines’ Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Germany’s Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB). These agreements are anticipated to enhance collaboration in areas crucial for the Philippines’ advancement, such as renewable energy, manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, aerospace, innovation, startups, IT-BPM, and mineral processing.
This visit is deemed “business-focused,” reflecting both countries’ intent to deepen economic ties. Germany is recognized as the Philippines’ 12th trading partner, 10th export market, and 15th import supplier. The trade relationship has been marked by significant exchanges in electronic products, processed food and beverages, machinery, transport equipment, and other electronics, with Germany supplying the Philippines with essential goods like airplanes, aircraft accessories, and other technological components.
However, President Marcos’ trip has stirred controversy among Filipino migrant groups in Europe, particularly BAYAN Europe, which plans to protest in front of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel. They criticize the visit’s intention to improve the Marcos family’s image and express concern over Germany’s commitment to supplying drones to the Philippines amidst rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
Following the Berlin visit, President Marcos will proceed to Prague for a state visit to the Czech Republic, continuing his mission to strengthen the Philippines’ international relations and promote economic growth.
