MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is reportedly “ready to study” legislative proposals that would declare February 25 of every year a regular national holiday, according to Malacañang.
Key Points of the Proposal:
- Commemoration of EDSA: The proposal aims to honor the 1986 People Power Revolution, which peacefully ended the dictatorship of the President’s father.
- Current Status: For the 2026 anniversary, February 25 was declared a “special working day,” meaning classes and work proceeded as usual. Since 2023, the anniversary has not been included in the list of annual holidays.
- Legislation Filed: Lawmakers from the Akayan Party-list (including Chel Diokno and Percival Cendaña) and Dinagat Islands Rep. Arlene Bag-ao have filed House Bill No. 7911, seeking to restore Feb. 25 as a regular holiday.
- Economic Considerations: Palace press officer Claire Castro noted that while the President is open to review, the administration is mindful of the “strain” too many holidays place on the business community.
Heightened Security and Protests:
As the nation marks the 40th anniversary of the EDSA revolt on Wednesday:
- Red Alert: Metro Manila is under red alert. Over 13,000 police personnel have been deployed to ensure safety during various assemblies and protests.
- Student Unity: Student leaders from major UAAP schools (including UP, Ateneo, DLSU, and UST) signed a unity statement to “reignite People Power” and protest against corruption and political dynasties.
- DOLE Reminder: The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reiterated a “no work, no pay” principle for this year’s special working day.
The President has stated that once formal bill versions are submitted to his office, he will take action for review.
