Late Sunday night, a passenger vessel with 223 people onboard experienced an unforeseen incident as it ran aground in the vicinity waters of Barangay Capaclan, Romblon. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) swiftly responded to the emergency, ensuring the safe evacuation of all individuals involved.
The MV SWM Salve Regina, journeying from Magdiwang Port, found itself in distress around 11:45 p.m. However, thanks to the prompt actions of the PCG, all 168 passengers and 55 crew members were confirmed to be in good physical condition following the incident. The passengers were subsequently evacuated to the safety of Romblon Public Plaza, while the crew remained onboard to oversee the vessel’s condition.
The PCG, alongside its operational control units, immediately initiated a thorough check of the passengers and crew upon reaching the incident area. Their quick response ensured that everyone was accounted for and in good health.
In addition, Coast Guard Sub Station Romblon personnel continued to monitor the situation of the MV SWM Salve Regina closely. Initial observations revealed no signs of oil spillage or flooding, mitigating concerns over potential environmental damage.
The cause of the vessel running aground is currently under investigation by the PCG. This incident highlights the importance of emergency preparedness and the effectiveness of the Philippine Coast Guard’s response to maritime emergencies.
