The emergency repairs for San Juanico Bridge in Eastern Visayas may require up to ₱500 million, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
OCD Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno told Super Radyo dzBB that the figure is a preliminary estimate, with detailed assessments still pending. The government is currently reviewing the possibility of sourcing the budget from the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management fund, as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has yet to allocate repair funds.
DPWH inspections flagged structural integrity issues, prompting restrictions on the bridge. Vehicles over three tons are now banned from crossing the 2.16-kilometer span. All vehicles must pass one at a time along the centerline and follow traffic protocols strictly.
To support transport continuity, heavier vehicles are advised to use roll-on/roll-off (RORO) services available at nearby ports including Tacloban, Calbayog, Catbalogan, and others.
OCD and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council have raised a blue alert status, enhancing readiness in anticipation of further deterioration or complications. A dedicated San Juanico Task Group has also been activated to manage safety and operations.
Meanwhile, the Samar Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has proposed a State of Emergency for the province. Starting May 18, pedestrian access to the bridge has been suspended for safety, with coasters and light vehicles provided as alternatives.
The San Juanico Bridge, completed in 1973, is the third-longest sea-spanning bridge in the Philippines, connecting Samar and Leyte.
