Senator Jinggoy Estrada, recently convicted of direct and indirect bribery linked to the pork barrel scam, will continue his duties as a senator, stated Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri. Despite the conviction by the Sandiganbayan 5th Division, Zubiri emphasized Estrada’s right to pursue legal remedies, including a Motion for Reconsideration with the Sandiganbayan or an appeal with the Supreme Court. He stressed that until the decision is final and executory, Senator Estrada is obligated to fulfill his senatorial responsibilities.
The Sandiganbayan’s decision acquitted Estrada of plunder but found him guilty of bribery charges related to the misuse of his pork barrel funds from 2004 to 2010. While the Senate respects the court’s ruling, Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva expects Estrada to remain focused on his senatorial duties, honoring the trust of the 15,108,625 Filipinos who voted for him.
Senator JV Ejercito, Estrada’s brother, called for respect for the justice system’s wisdom and fairness, emphasizing its role in upholding law and order and providing justice.
Estrada himself, expressing relief over his acquittal in the plunder case, maintained his innocence, asserting that he did not engage in theft or receive illicit funds. His legal counsel, Atty. Alexis Abastillas Suarez, announced plans to review the court’s decision in detail before determining their next steps, considering the plunder acquittal a significant victory.
As the situation evolves, the focus remains on the legal processes and Estrada’s continued role in the Senate amid the unfolding legal scenario.
