A distressing event unfolded at PortAventura theme park in Tarragona, Spain, when a tree, toppled by strong winds, fell onto the Tomahawk rollercoaster, resulting in 14 individuals being injured, two of them critically. The incident, which occurred on a sunny Sunday morning amidst Spain’s Costa Dorada, a hotspot for tourists, has raised concerns over safety in amusement parks.
The Tomahawk, described on the PortAventura website as a “children’s roller coaster with frenetic climbs and descents,” became the scene of an unforeseen accident when some of the tree’s branches struck the ride’s occupants. Emergency services from Catalonia were quick to respond, attending to the victims on site. The seriously injured were promptly transported to separate hospitals for immediate care, while three others, suffering from less severe injuries, also received hospital treatment.
This incident has cast a shadow over the beloved theme park, prompting a review of safety measures to prevent future accidents, especially concerning natural elements like weather conditions.
