In a bid to improve home safety, a team of engineering students from Adamson University has designed an innovative device that detects gas leaks and automatically shuts off the LPG tank to prevent fire accidents.
Featured in 24 Oras‘ “Game Changer” segment, the invention, called Prest-O-Grip, features an LCD display that clearly indicates whether the gas valve is open or closed—solving a common household dilemma.
During a demo, developer Ray Tristan Publeo showed how the device reacts to gas using a lighter, simulating an LPG leak. Engineer Gilmore Flyd Lozano explained, “A motor directly linked to the valve kicks in when gas is detected and immediately shuts it off.”
What sets Prest-O-Grip apart is its smart functionality. With internet access, the device can be monitored and controlled remotely via a mobile app. It also features a status-check button and automatically sends SMS alerts when it senses a gas leak.
Developer James Bernard Yuman emphasized how the device gives users peace of mind and real-time control.
This innovation comes at a crucial time. According to 2024 data, kitchen fires—many of which involve LPG tanks—ranked as the third most common cause of fire incidents in the country.
