LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — Residents in several villages of Legazpi City reported light ash fall on Monday night, a result of ongoing pyroclastic density currents from the restless Mayon Volcano.

The ash fall, which reportedly began around 8:00 p.m. and lasted for nearly an hour, covered vehicles and surfaces in the northern portion of the city. Affected areas include Barangay 45 (Dita), Barangay 48 (Bagong Abre), Barangay 51 (Buyoan), and Barangay 52 (Matanag).

Safety First In response to the volcanic activity, Legazpi City Mayor Hisham Ismail immediately ordered the distribution of N95 face masks to residents in the hardest-hit barangays. Local authorities have also advised the public to stay indoors and close windows and doors to avoid respiratory issues caused by the fine volcanic particles.

The Legazpi Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO) continues to conduct validation and monitoring across the city’s villages.

Ongoing Unrest The ash fall event is the latest reminder of Mayon’s heightened state of unrest. Volcanologists have been closely tracking the volcano’s activity, which has already prompted the rise of “tent cities” in various parts of Albay to shelter families fleeing from the danger zone.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and stay tuned to official government bulletins as Mayon remains under close observation for any sudden changes in activity.
