ABORLAN, Palawan — In a significant shift toward modern warfare, the 2026 Balikatan Exercises featured the extensive deployment of unmanned systems during a high-stakes counter-landing and live-fire simulation. The drills, held on Monday, April 27, 2026, along the shores of Barangay Aporawan, showcased the integrated use of aerial and surface drones to repel a hypothetical sea-based invasion.
AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized that the heavy reliance on drones in this year’s exercises reflects the changing character of global conflict.
- Aerial & Surface Drones: Both Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) were utilized for surveillance, reconnaissance, and as active targets to test the accuracy of shore-based weapon systems.
- Counter-Drone Operations: The exercise also included maneuvers to detect and neutralize “hostile” drones, a critical capability in contemporary defense strategies.
- Precision Fire: Brawner noted that the accuracy displayed against small, mobile unmanned targets demonstrates the enhanced coordination between Filipino and allied forces.
The choice of Aborlan, Palawan, as the exercise site is strategically significant due to its proximity to the West Philippine Sea and the Kalayaan Island Group.
- Allied Forces: Participating troops included the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the United States Marine Corps (USMC), the Australian Defence Force (ADF), and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).
- Observers: High-level representatives from Canada and France were present to observe the coastal defense integration.
- Coastal Defense Mission: Brig. Gen. Wilfredo Manalang, commander of the 3rd Marine Brigade, stated that the activity focused on a “realistic” archipelagic defense scenario, integrating land, air, and maritime assets.
Maj. Gen. Thomas Savage of the USMC remarked on the evolution of the annual war games, noting that the 2026 iteration is the most complex to date.
- Multilateral Integration: The drills involve over 17,000 soldiers from seven countries, moving beyond bilateral US-PH training to a more integrated, multilateral defense framework.
- Maritime Security: Following the Palawan drills, a Maritime Key Terrain Security Operation is scheduled in Balabac from May 1 to 4, alongside an ongoing Cyber Defense Exercise at the Western Command.
General Brawner reaffirmed that these exercises are vital for protecting the Philippines’ territory and resources, specifically food and energy sources in the West Philippine Sea, while upholding a “rules-based international order” in the Indo-Pacific region.
