The Philippines has reached a significant milestone in regional sports as it officially accepted the hosting duties for the 2028 Asian Beach Games. In a formal handover ceremony held in Sanya, China, Philippine sports officials received the flag of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), signaling the start of the country’s four-year preparation for the prestigious multi-sport event.
The successful bid underscores the Philippines’ growing reputation as a preferred destination for international sporting competitions. By hosting the 2028 edition, the country aims to showcase its world-class coastal destinations while promoting sports tourism and regional cooperation. Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to deliver a memorable experience for athletes and spectators across the continent.
Preparations are expected to involve the development and upgrading of beach sports facilities in key coastal regions. While specific venues are yet to be finalized, the government and sports bodies are looking into provinces with established tourism infrastructure to accommodate the thousands of athletes and delegates expected to participate.
The Asian Beach Games feature a unique array of disciplines, including beach volleyball, beach soccer, coastal rowing, and martial arts, among others. Beyond the competition, the event is seen as a strategic opportunity to boost local economies and highlight the Philippines’ commitment to environmental sustainability in its maritime areas.
As the official countdown begins, the POC and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) are slated to form a dedicated organizing committee. This body will oversee the logistical, technical, and promotional aspects of the games, ensuring that the 2028 Asian Beach Games sets a high standard for future iterations of the biennial tournament.
