MANILA — Renowned cardiologist and health advocate Dr. Willie Ong has officially withdrawn from the 2025 Senate race, citing the need to prioritize his health.
Ong’s Statement on His Withdrawal
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Ong announced his decision, saying:
“I am officially withdrawing my candidacy for the 2025 elections so I can focus more on taking care of my health.”
Despite stepping away from the race, he reassured his supporters that he remains committed to advocating for good governance and backing candidates who share his vision.
“Our advocacy to help poor Filipinos continues even in my private capacity.”
Ong’s Health Battle
In September 2024, Ong revealed he was undergoing cancer treatment, after doctors discovered a 16 x 13 x 12 cm sarcoma in his abdomen, located behind his heart and in front of his spine.
That same month, Ong still announced his senatorial bid, with his wife, Dr. Liza Ong, filing his certificate of candidacy on his behalf while he underwent treatment in Singapore.
