Gilas Pilipinas may face a significant challenge in the upcoming third window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, with big man Kai Sotto nursing an apparent left knee injury sustained during Koshigoya’s loss to Mikawa in the Japan B. League.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Sotto’s availability, head coach Tim Cone emphasized that the national team will stick to its current pool of players.
Japeth Aguilar Ready to Step Up
Cone highlighted veteran big Japeth Aguilar as a key figure who could fill the gap if Sotto is unavailable.
“That’s why we have Japeth. Japeth is there to replace any of the bigs that we have,” Cone said.
“If you can tell me if there’s another big out there that equates Japeth’s size and ability, then I’ll be happy to look at him. He’s eligible and has so much experience.”
Sotto’s Impact on Gilas
Sotto, 22, has been a cornerstone of Gilas Pilipinas’ success, notably delivering a career-high 19 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks in the team’s historic 93-89 victory over New Zealand during the second window in November.
He is currently averaging 15.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists in the tournament, solidifying his role as a key contributor.
Current Pool Strategy
Cone reiterated that maintaining the current 14-man pool, which includes June Mar Fajardo, AJ Edu, Mason Amos, Carl Tamayo, and Ange Kouame, is crucial given the tight preparation window.
“There’s a real clamor for a bigger pool, but it’s just the way the windows are set up in terms of small time for preparation. If we had two or three months, then we could do something like that,” Cone explained.
“This is how national teams operate nowadays. We’re going with the 14.”
Plans for Doha Friendlies
Gilas Pilipinas is considering a trip to Doha for friendly games ahead of the February qualifiers. However, Cone noted that the plan is still tentative as most players are committed to their respective PBA or overseas clubs.
“We’re just trying to get the guys. There’s a chance we may go to Doha before the next window for some friendlies,” Cone said.
“That might happen around February 10 or 11, but between now and then, the players are with their teams.”
The upcoming qualifiers will test Gilas Pilipinas’ depth and adaptability as they prepare to compete at a high level despite potential setbacks.
