Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada is calling for an increase in the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) budget following the withdrawal of BRP Teresa Magbanua from Escoda Shoal due to seaworthiness issues, depleted supplies, and adverse weather conditions. Estrada, who chairs the Senate national defense committee, emphasized the importance of bolstering budgetary support to ensure the proper maintenance of vessels and adequate provisions for crews during missions.
Estrada argued that by addressing the logistical needs of the PCG, the country can better defend its maritime territories and safeguard national interests. The Magbanua had been stationed at Escoda Shoal since April amid China’s reported reclamation activities in the area.
The ship returned to Palawan with a crew suffering from illness and dehydration, having faced numerous challenges, including interference from Chinese forces that blocked resupply efforts. Despite the pullout, the PCG asserts that the Philippines has not lost control of Escoda Shoal, located within the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
