The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has issued a warning over the increased risk of lahar flows from Mayon Volcano in the Bicol Region, in light of heavy rainfall expected from Severe Tropical Storm Uwan.

Forecasters project intense to torrential downpours in the region, which PHIVOLCS says could mobilise loose volcanic materials deposited during the volcano’s recent eruptions. Such materials may be swept down drainage channels and rivers, forming fast‑moving muddy flows known as lahars—some of which may be life‑threatening.

Communities identified within near‑volcano lahar‑prone channels are being urged to ready evacuation plans. Local authorities have been asked to monitor rainfall closely, verify that river channels and drainage paths are clear, and ensure safe shelter access especially in valleys and slopes below Mayon.
