The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has brought good news to its customers with a significant reduction in electricity rates for April. This decrease, amounting to 98.79 centavos per kilowatt-hour (kWh), lowers the rate to P10.9518/kWh from the previous month’s P11.9397/kWh. For typical households consuming around 200kWh, this rate cut translates to an estimated savings of P198 on their monthly electricity bill.

This adjustment is attributed to the drop in generation and transmission charges, notably from savings achieved through independent power producers (IPPs) and power supply agreements (PSAs). This reduction more than compensates for the rate increases experienced in the first quarter of the year and offsets the rise in charges from the wholesale electricity spot market (WESM) due to increased demand and tighter supply in the Luzon grid.

Meralco emphasizes the importance of energy efficiency practices, especially during the summer months when electricity consumption typically spikes due to higher temperatures. In line with this, Meralco continues to advocate for the government’s interruptible load program (ILP) to ensure grid stability.

Investing significantly in its infrastructure, Meralco is preparing for the anticipated summer demand and the ongoing effects of El Niño, allocating P40 billion for capital expenditures to enhance its service and operational capabilities across its service areas in Luzon and the Visayas.
