Herma Shipyard Inc. (HSI) has successfully completed the drydocking and upgrade project for the Philippine Navy’s BRP Gregorio Del Pilar (PS-15), an offshore patrol vessel. The vessel was formally handed back to its commanding officer, Commander Philip Plaza, during a turnover ceremony held at HSI’s Bataan facility.

The upgrades, carried out in partnership with South Korea’s Hanwha Systems Co., Ltd., focused on enhancing the ship’s defense capabilities. This project marks the final phase of improvements across the Philippine Navy’s Gregorio Del Pilar-Class fleet, which includes the PS-16 (BRP Ramon Alcaraz) and PS-17 (BRP Andres Bonifacio).

Originally acquired from the U.S. Coast Guard as part of the Hamilton-class cutters transfer between 2011 and 2016, these 3,250-ton ships now serve as key assets in the Navy’s patrol force. “The project underscores the strength of partnerships with industry experts in achieving top-tier maritime defense capabilities,” said Commander Plaza.

Herma Group Director Jose Exiquel Esguerra added that the collaboration contributes significantly to the nation’s defense modernization efforts.

The Philippine Navy emphasized the operational and strategic value of these upgrades, noting that they align with the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC) and strengthen national maritime security efforts.

HSI, a Filipino-owned shipbuilding and repair company in the Freeport Area of Bataan, provides specialized services for domestic and international clients and is a part of the Herma Group conglomerate, active in various sectors including petroleum and environmental management.
