SUBIC BAY, ZAMBALES — The Philippines, along with the navies of the United States, Australia, Japan, and Canada, will participate in Exercise SAMASAMA, a joint military drill aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation. The UK will also be involved as an observer. Warships from these nations are currently docked at Subic Bay in preparation for the exercise, which will involve supply delivery operations and a joint sail off the coast of Northern Luzon.
Commodore Edward de Sagun, Naval Forces North commander, stated that the exercise focuses on improving logistical capabilities and is not intended as a provocation towards any country. The drill will steer clear of the disputed Scarborough Shoal, emphasizing cooperation rather than conflict.
China has criticized the Philippines’ invitation to allied navies, suggesting it may heighten tensions in the West Philippine Sea. However, Admiral Todd Cimicata, US Task Force 73 commander, noted that the exercise could help improve the Philippines’ resupply missions, including those to Ayungin Shoal.
