MAKATI CITY, Philippines — In a massive boost for Philippine higher education, Phinma Corp. Vice Chairman Oscar Hilado and his wife, Conchitina, have made a landmark donation of ₱400 million to support the college education of underprivileged Filipino youth.

The multi-million peso gift was officially turned over to the Phinma Foundation, the social responsibility arm of the Phinma Group. This donation is set to significantly expand the “Phinma National Scholarship Program,” which targets high-potential students from low-income families who are pursuing degrees in fields such as education, engineering, and accountancy.

The Hilados’ contribution is being hailed as one of the largest personal philanthropic acts in the Philippine education sector in recent years. Oscar Hilado, a veteran business leader who has been a pillar of the Phinma Group for decades, noted that the donation is an investment in the country’s future leaders.

“Education has always been at the heart of Phinma’s mission to make lives better,” the Hilado family said in a statement. “We believe that by providing these students with the tools they need to succeed, we are not just helping individuals, but also strengthening the backbone of our nation.”

The funds will go beyond just tuition fees. The expanded scholarship program is designed to provide a holistic support system, including monthly stipends, leadership training, and mentorship programs to ensure that scholars are “work-ready” upon graduation. The foundation aim is to bridge the gap for students who have the academic talent but lack the financial resources to cross the finish line of a four-year degree.

Education advocates have praised the move, noting that such private sector initiatives are crucial as the country works to recover from learning losses and improve its global competitiveness. With this ₱400-million endowment, hundreds of more students are expected to join the ranks of “Phinma Scholars” in the coming academic years, turning the dream of a college diploma into a reality.
