The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued a warning on Tuesday to communities near Mayon Volcano, cautioning that heavy rains from Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) could trigger lahar flows.

According to PHIVOLCS, the storm’s rains may generate volcanic sediment flows or lahars, as well as muddy streamflows in rivers and drainage areas around Mayon Volcano. These lahars pose a risk of inundation, burial, and washout to areas along the volcano’s slopes and downstream of several channels, including Miisi, Binaan, Anoling, and more.

Residents in these areas were urged to stay vigilant and local governments were advised to monitor storm conditions closely and implement preemptive safety measures. At the time of the advisory, Albay was under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1.

Tropical Storm Kristine was last located 335 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, with winds of 65 km/h and gusts of up to 80 km/h.
