Vice President Sara Duterte called on Filipinos to stand up for the rights of the country’s most vulnerable, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, as the Philippines observes Pride Month 2025.
In a video message released Monday, Duterte—who has previously identified as part of the LGBT community—praised the courage of LGBTQ+ individuals in living authentically. She said their bravery encourages society to uphold values of honesty, inclusion, and authenticity.
“Our democratic values compel us to protect those most at risk. Defending LGBT rights strengthens the very foundation of our freedoms,” Duterte stated.
She acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by many in the community, including workplace bias, unequal access to healthcare, and mental health struggles.
“Pride reminds us that our shared humanity can heal deep wounds. Diversity is not a flaw—it’s a source of strength and creativity,” she added.
Looking ahead, Duterte expressed hope for a more inclusive Philippines—one that embraces diversity as central to national identity, where dignity and courage are celebrated without question.
In 2023, she voiced support for laws that protect partnerships among LGBTQ+ individuals, though she clarified this did not specifically pertain to same-sex marriage.
