Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has shared that he is beginning to contemplate the conclusion of his illustrious NBA career.
In a clip from an interview posted by NBA on ESPN, Curry said:
“It’s OK to accept and acknowledge that the end is near, but only because it allows you to enjoy what’s happening right now. The more you talk about it and acknowledge it, the more it levels up the sense of urgency in the moment.”
A Stellar Legacy
Now in his 16th NBA season, the 36-year-old Curry has solidified himself as one of basketball’s all-time greats. He has led the Warriors to four NBA championships, earned two league MVP awards, made 10 All-Star appearances, and holds the record for the most 3-point shots made in NBA history with 3,841.
This season, Curry is averaging 21.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game. While his scoring has dipped compared to previous years, his contributions in other areas remain above his career averages.
Adjusting to Change
Curry’s playing time has decreased to 31.0 minutes per game, down by nearly four minutes compared to two seasons ago. Additionally, his 3-point shooting percentage has dipped to 36.3%, below his career average of 39.7%. However, his efficiency from 2-point range has improved significantly, shooting .571 this season versus a career average of .517.
Curry is approaching two milestones: 1,000 regular-season games (he’s 21 games away) and 150 playoff appearances (currently at 147). He has expressed a desire for another deep postseason run as the Warriors, currently eighth in the Western Conference, aim to climb the standings.
Contract and Future
Curry remains under contract with the Warriors through the 2026-27 season after signing a $62.59 million one-year extension in August. Though he hinted at retirement being on his mind more than before, Curry has not provided a timeline for when he might step away from the game.
The Warriors face the Los Angeles Lakers in a much-anticipated Christmas Day showdown as they aim to solidify their playoff position.
