In Iligan, Lanao del Norte, the altruistic efforts of a teacher to provide laptops for her students have culminated in a remarkable success story, with several beneficiaries now celebrating their graduation. This initiative, spearheaded by Teacher Melanie Reyes Figueroa, aimed to bridge the digital divide and ensure her students could continue their education during the transition to online learning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mark Salazar of State of the Nation highlighted the story of Mark Maata, a student who, before Teacher Melanie’s intervention, faced the prospect of borrowing money to purchase a laptop. Another student, Casandra Capampangan, expressed profound gratitude for the support that enabled her to move from using just a cellphone for her studies to having a laptop, significantly impacting her educational journey.

Teacher Melanie’s call for support on social media quickly attracted sponsors, allowing her to purchase the first laptop within five days, in a campaign she dubbed “Laptop para sa Pangarap” (Laptop for Dreams). Over two years, this initiative has gifted nine laptops to deserving students, thanks to the generosity of various benefactors.

The success of these students is a testament to Teacher Melanie’s belief in their potential and her commitment to supporting young individuals with the ability to excel academically. She hopes to inspire a cycle of generosity, encouraging her students to pay it forward and contribute to the community when they are capable.

Teacher Melanie’s story is not just about providing technological resources; it’s about fostering hope, resilience, and the spirit of giving within the community, proving that collective effort can make a significant difference in the lives of students.
