CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar – A tragic road accident claimed one life and injured four others when a trailer truck lost control, sideswiped two motorcycles, and rammed into a house along the national highway in Barangay Palanas, Jiabong town, on January 5, 2026 (Monday morning).

The victim was identified as motorcycle rider Rodel Sumook, 42, who died on the spot from severe injuries. The four injured—two other riders and two house occupants—were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of fractures and lacerations.

Police reports indicate the truck, loaded with goods and heading southbound, experienced brake failure on a downhill slope, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered into oncoming traffic before crashing into the roadside house.

Authorities are investigating, with charges pending against the truck driver for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries. The incident highlights ongoing road safety concerns in Samar’s hilly terrains.
