Eleven people lost their lives in a fire that engulfed a five-storey commercial-residential building in Binondo, Manila on Friday morning.

According to a report on Balitanghali by Super Radyo dzBB’s Sam Nielsen, the initial information regarding the number of fatalities was provided by Kagawad Nelson Ty of Barangay 289, Zone 27, who had been coordinating with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). The BFP-National Capital Region later confirmed the death toll.

The fire, which broke out at 647 Carvajal Street, was first reported at 7:28 a.m. and escalated to the second alarm by 8:14 a.m. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze by 9:31 a.m. and declared it fully extinguished by 10:03 a.m.

The fire caused approximately P100,000 worth of property damage. According to the building’s security guard, the fire originated in the canteen due to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leak in the kitchen.
