Health officials in Alabel, Sarangani have confirmed three cases of Mpox, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO). The announcement was made as part of an ongoing effort to monitor and contain the disease.
The first patient is a 73-year-old woman who had traveled from Polomolok, South Cotabato. Initially diagnosed with chickenpox, she later developed body pain and was admitted after showing symptoms consistent with Mpox. Testing confirmed she was positive for the virus.
“We test any case that shows suspicious rashes, even if it appears to be chickenpox—and this one turned out positive,” said Dr. Alvin Alejandro, Sarangani’s Provincial Health Officer.
The second case is a 28-year-old woman with a recent travel history to General Santos City. She developed rashes a few days later, was tested, and confirmed positive.
The third case, a 37-year-old woman, had no recent travel history.
Authorities are currently tracking at least 21 suspected Mpox cases, many of whom have had links to Polomolok. Samples have been collected, and ten test results have returned—three of which are confirmed.
Dr. Alejandro emphasized the importance of early testing and hygiene precautions. The public is urged to avoid direct skin contact with symptomatic individuals, especially those with visible rashes or lesions.
Although face masks are no longer required, health officials continue to advise their use in crowded areas. Anyone experiencing symptoms is encouraged to seek medical attention promptly.
