A tragic accident claimed four lives, including that of a four-year-old boy, after a 16-wheeler truck collided with three motorcycles at the intersection of Ortigas Avenue and Lanuza Avenue early Sunday morning, Pasig Police reported.

Details of the Accident

Three of the fatalities were family members, including the young child, while the fourth was the driver of another motorcycle.

  • Injuries: Two individuals sustained fractured arms and ribs and are receiving medical care. Another motorcycle rider was discharged from the hospital.
  • Traffic: The accident caused significant congestion in the area.

The truck, loaded with thousands of sacks of rice, spilled its cargo onto the road after the crash.

Cause of the Crash

The truck driver claimed that brake failure caused him to swerve sharply, crashing into the motorcycles before the truck overturned. He now faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides, serious injuries, and property damage.

Aftermath and Community Response

All three motorcycles were destroyed in the collision, with a rider’s helmet among the debris. Pasig City Police Chief P/Col. Hendrix Mangadan confirmed nine casualties were taken to the hospital.

Meanwhile, some bystanders salvaged sacks of rice from the wreckage, citing the high cost of rice as a reason.

“This is still edible. We just have to clean it. It’s such a waste to let it go, especially with how expensive rice is nowadays,” one passerby explained.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
