A tragic collision between two SUVs in Opol, Misamis Oriental, claimed the life of a 67-year-old woman and injured six members of her family, including three children.
The Accident
CCTV footage captured the accident, which occurred at an intersection. An SUV, driven by a 17-year-old, crashed into another vehicle, causing it to spin and flip multiple times.
The woman, who was seated by the backseat door at the point of impact, suffered a fatal head injury and was declared dead on the spot. “She was sitting at the very edge of the backseat, where the impact happened. Her head must have hit something hard,” explained Police Staff Sergeant Daryl Cariliman, an investigator with the Opol police station.
Injuries and Investigation
The six injured passengers, all from the same family, were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The teenage driver, who admitted unfamiliarity with the area and claimed he didn’t notice the intersection, is now in police custody.
Despite being underage, the teen possessed a valid non-professional driver’s license, which allowed him to drive private vehicles.
Legal Action
The victim’s family has expressed their intent to pursue legal action. The driver may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries.
