The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced plans to strengthen its facilities against potential missile attacks, following reports of threats from China. This information was highlighted by Senator Imee Marcos, though it remains unverified.
Precautionary Measures
In a briefing after a command conference with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., AFP Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized the need to prepare for various threats, including missile attacks. “A missile attack is a possibility… That is why we are also preparing for those,” he stated, adding that hardening facilities is a key measure.
Verification of Threats
Senator Imee Marcos recently expressed concern over China’s alleged plans to target Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites with hypersonic missiles. However, General Brawner noted that the AFP has yet to confirm these threats. “We have not seen a report to this effect… So I cannot give a comment about this,” he said, urging the public to remain calm.
Addressing Modern Warfare
In addition to missile threats, the AFP is also preparing for possible drone attacks, as seen in conflicts like those in Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza. “We are studying all of this and we also need to take action or steps that will allow us to defend the country from these kinds of attacks,” Brawner explained.
Updated Territorial Defense Plan
During the conference, the AFP presented an updated territorial defense plan, “Bantay Kalayaan,” aimed at countering foreign infiltration. President Marcos praised the holistic approach of the plan, which considers both external and internal threats. “We are addressing the united front works of other countries that want to influence different sectors of our society,” Brawner said.
