The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced on Sunday its commitment to maintaining a strong presence in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), asserting a robust stance amidst recent tensions with China.
AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla stated on Super Radyo dzBB that the morale of troops stationed in the WPS remains high despite ongoing challenges. “We continuously monitor the morale of our troops, and we see that their state of morale is high,” Padilla said.
The reaffirmation of the AFP’s stance comes in the wake of an incident on Saturday, where Chinese ships “intentionally” rammed the BRP Teresa Magbanua multiple times. This action, Padilla noted, has only strengthened the resolve of Philippine servicemen to defend their nation’s sovereignty.
“These events are igniting a patriotic spirit and a strong will to fight for our country,” Padilla added. “More troops are now willing to be stationed on the frontlines in the WPS. We can see that every Filipino is fired up with patriotic fervor.”
Padilla emphasized that the AFP would remain steadfast in its mandate to protect the nation’s territorial waters and maintain a presence in the WPS.
Successful Resupply Mission
Padilla also reported the success of a recent resupply mission to the BRP Teresa Magbanua stationed at Escoda Shoal, which was conducted using helicopters. “We were able to successfully deliver provisions through aerial operations,” she said. “We will not be deterred from continuing these humanitarian missions and supporting our deployed troops across the WPS.”
When asked if future supplies would always be delivered by helicopter, Padilla mentioned that it would depend on the situation.
Modernization Efforts and Red Lines
The AFP spokesperson discussed ongoing efforts to modernize the defense forces, supported by additional government funding. The public can expect the procurement of modern equipment and enhanced training exercises with allied nations. “We are strengthening our alliances and conducting numerous exercises to improve interoperability with like-minded nations, ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific,” she noted.
Padilla also highlighted that the AFP had established “red lines” in response to China’s aggressive actions, adhering to international laws and rules of engagement. “We are performing our mandate in accordance with international laws, including the arbitral ruling,” she stated.
Incident with Chinese Coast Guard
On Saturday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported that a Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessel intentionally rammed the BRP Teresa Magbanua three times. The incident occurred near Escoda Shoal, just 75 nautical miles from Palawan, and involved CCG vessel 5205 directly ramming the PCG vessel’s port bow before turning around and striking it twice more. The PCG described their actions as unprovoked, yet the Chinese vessels persisted.
