The legal team of former Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo is exploring the possibility of filing a case against Al Jazeera. This comes after the international news network aired a documentary in which Guo was implicated as a Chinese spy by a Chinese national detained in Thailand.
“We are looking into the legal grounds to pursue a case against Al Jazeera for their baseless and malicious claims. Where is the justice in making such allegations without evidence?” said Guo’s lawyer, Stephen David.
The documentary in question features Chinese businessman She Zhijiang, who identified himself as a Chinese spy and claimed to have dedicated his life, along with Guo—also referred to as Guo Hua Ping—to China’s Ministry of State Security. Encrypted files allegedly left by She reportedly contained a dossier on Guo.
Despite these claims, Guo has denied any association with She Zhijiang.
The Department of Justice has stated that it will investigate the allegations, collaborating with national security agencies to verify the information. David welcomed the probe, stating that if the accusations are true, appropriate legal charges should be filed; if not, the situation must be clarified to protect those affected by these unfounded claims.
In addition to the controversy surrounding the documentary, Guo is facing several legal challenges, including a human trafficking case in Pasig, a graft case in Valenzuela, and various complaints related to tax evasion, money laundering, and other legal matters.
