In a deeply personal revelation that has resonated with fans worldwide, Filipino rock icon Arnel Pineda recently opened up about the immense pressure of fronting the legendary American band Journey, admitting that he attempted to quit the group multiple times due to personal struggles and the weight of expectations.

During an intimate interview on the “Rock Talk” podcast aired on April 4, 2026, the 58-year-old singer shared the emotional toll of his nearly two-decade tenure as the successor to Steve Perry. Pineda confessed that there were moments when he felt he “didn’t belong” and even formally offered to step down to preserve the band’s legacy.

Pineda, who was famously discovered by guitarist Neal Schon on YouTube in 2007, described the experience of being in Journey as a “beautiful golden cage.” While he expressed eternal gratitude for the opportunity that changed his life, he admitted that the constant comparison to Steve Perry—and the relentless touring schedule—at times became overwhelming.

“I tried to give it back,” Pineda revealed. “I told Neal [Schon] and Jonathan [Cain], ‘Maybe it’s time to find someone else. Someone who sounds more like the records, or someone who is younger.’ I felt like I was failing the fans who still wanted the ‘original’ sound.”

Beyond the professional pressure, Pineda alluded to personal reasons involving his health and family life in the Philippines. The grueling international tours often kept him away from his wife, Cherry, and their children for months at a time, leading to bouts of depression and vocal strain.

“There were nights in the hotel where I would just cry because I missed my kids so much,” Arnel shared. “And then my voice would give out because of the stress. I felt like a fraud.”

Despite his offers to leave, Pineda credited Neal Schon for being his “biggest anchor.” Schon reportedly refused to accept Arnel’s resignation, reminding him that the fans had embraced him for his own unique spirit and “Cinderella story” resilience.

“Neal told me, ‘Arnel, you’re not a replacement; you’re the continuation,'” Pineda recounted. This support, coupled with the overwhelming love from the Filipino community and Journey’s global fanbase, helped him push through the dark periods.

As Journey prepares for their 2026 Summer Stadium Tour, Pineda says he is in a “much better place” mentally and physically. He has adjusted his vocal warm-ups and made it a point to bring his family on certain legs of the tour to maintain his emotional balance.

“I’ve learned that it’s okay to be vulnerable,” he said. “I’m still here because I love the music, and I love the guys. I’m going to keep singing ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ until my lungs tell me otherwise.”

Arnel Pineda’s story remains one of the most celebrated “rags-to-riches” tales in music history. By speaking candidly about his mental health and his desire to quit, he has further endeared himself to fans who see him not just as a rock star, but as a grounded and relatable human being.

As the interview concluded, Pineda had a message for aspiring Filipino artists: “The dream is big, but the shoes are heavy. Just make sure you’re wearing them for the right reasons.”
