A Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) official expressed concern over the use of pork in pastil, calling it “culturally insensitive” given the dish’s deep cultural and religious significance.
Pastil, a popular Moro rice meal, traditionally features steamed rice topped with halal meats such as chicken, beef, or fish. As the dish gains popularity across the country, some business owners have introduced variations using pork, which is forbidden in Islam.
BARMM spokesperson and Cabinet Secretary Mohd Asnin Pendatun emphasized that while non-Muslims are free to create their own versions, they should refrain from calling it “pastil” if it contains pork. He suggested the name “pork binalot” instead to avoid cultural appropriation.
