The rite of coronation was executed on Sept. 24, 1924 with apostolic delegate, Guillermo Piani. Thus, declaring Our Lady of Penafrancia as the regional patroness of Bicolandia. The venerated image is housed at the National Shrine and Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Penafrancia.
Strict observance of the celebration is being imposed to protect the devotees from Covid-19 and so as to avoid the repetition of the “Fall of Colgante Bridge” wherein at least 138 devotees lost their lives due to tragedy.
It will be recalled that in September 16, 1972, more than 100 hundred devotees were killed when the Colgante Bridge in Barangay Peñafrancia collapsed from the weight of devotees waiting for the pagoda of Bicolandia’s grand patroness to pass through but halfway to its destination during the fluvial procession along the Naga River.
The tragic collapse of Colgante Bridge that killed over 100 hundred devotees occurred a few days before the declaration of totalitarian or martial law by then strongman Ferdinand Marcos 50 years ago here.
