In an electrifying match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Bong Quinto emerged as the clutch performer for Meralco Bolts, leading them to a 121-117 overtime victory against Rain or Shine in the PBA Philippine Cup. Quinto, who finished the game with 16 points, was instrumental in the overtime period, scoring seven crucial points that secured Meralco’s first win of the conference on Saturday.

The game was a roller-coaster, with Meralco initially squandering a 14-point lead as Rain or Shine mounted a comeback in the third quarter. The match turned into a tightly contested battle, ultimately requiring extra time to decide the victor. Despite the absence of Chris Newsome, who fouled out in regulation, Quinto stepped up, particularly in overtime, starting with a pivotal three-pointer that set the tone for Meralco’s triumph.

Allein Maliksi led the scoring for Meralco with 26 points, while Norbert Torres and Cliff Hodge contributed 16 points each, and Anjo Caram added 13 points. The victory was a team effort, with multiple players stepping up to fill the void left by Newsome’s exit.

Rain or Shine, despite a stellar 29-point performance from rookie Adrian Nocum and a 25-point outing from Leonard Santillan, suffered their second consecutive defeat. The game’s intensity peaked in overtime when Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao was ejected after receiving two technical fouls for expressing his frustrations towards the officials.

Quinto’s performance in the clutch moments of the game, including his split free throws that sent the game into overtime and his subsequent scoring outburst in the extra period, underscored his importance to the Meralco Bolts. His ability to deliver under pressure was a key factor in Meralco overcoming the challenge posed by Rain or Shine and securing a much-needed victory.

As the PBA Philippine Cup continues, Meralco’s resilience and team spirit, exemplified by their comeback and eventual win in overtime, will be crucial as they aim for more victories in the tournament.
