In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health and Bethany Children’s Health Center successfully performed the world’s first robotic brain surgery on a child. The patient, eight-year-old Karleigh Fry from Oklahoma, suffered from rapid-onset primary dystonia, which severely limited her ability to walk, sit, and even speak.

Dystonia, as described by the Mayo Clinic, is a movement disorder causing involuntary muscle contractions and twisting motions. Karleigh’s condition was so severe that her arms would often lock up, necessitating her mother, Trisha Fry, to put socks on her hands to prevent self-injury.

Revolutionary Procedure

The hospitals opted for a deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedure, a treatment involving the implantation of electrodes in specific brain areas. These electrodes connect to a neurostimulator in the upper chest, sending electrical signals to regulate abnormal brain impulses. While DBS is typically used for conditions like Parkinson’s disease, this instance was unique due to the use of robotic assistance to enhance surgical precision and safety.

Trisha Fry explained that the surgery had two main phases. The initial operation was conducted at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, followed by post-operative care and pediatric rehabilitation at Bethany Children’s Health Center. Remarkably, Karleigh regained control of her arms within minutes of activating the neurotransmitter and has since shown significant improvements in speech and movement.
