Camille Prats and Suzi Entrata-Abrera recently discussed their perspectives on the legalization of divorce in the Philippines on “Fast Talk With Boy Abunda.”
Suzi Entrata-Abrera’s Stance
Suzi Entrata-Abrera suggested that if divorce remains illegal, any form of abuse within a marriage should be criminalized to protect individuals trapped in abusive relationships.
“Criminalize abuse. If that is the reason why you guys are together, tapos di ka makawala kasi walang divorce,” Suzi said. She emphasized the importance of recognizing all forms of abuse, including physical, mental, and emotional.
Camille Prats’s Perspective
Camille Prats expressed her reservations about divorce, voicing concern for the welfare of children in such situations.
“Parang ngayon kasi kapag ka laging ganon ‘yong pag-isip natin sa mag-asawa na that’s always an option, then whoever we find in life, ‘di naman perpekto ‘yong tao na ‘yon eh,” she stated. Camille also highlighted the need for mutual consent in divorce proceedings, noting the complexities when one partner opposes the separation.
Legislative Context
In May, the House of Representatives approved a measure on absolute divorce on its final reading, moving the Philippines closer to legalizing divorce.
