A century-old acacia tree collapsed on two vehicles in the parking lot of the Minor Basilica of John the Baptist in Taytay, Rizal, on Sunday morning as Tropical Storm Aghon swept through the area.
Incident Details
The tree fell around 9 a.m. during Sunday Mass, damaging a white van and a green SUV. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Rizal Governor Rebecca Ynares confirmed the incident, and Christian Maño of dzBB reported on the scene. The tree, believed to have stood since the 18th century—potentially planted in the 1830s—was an iconic landmark for the parish community.
Parish Statement
In a statement, the Minor Basilica of John the Baptist expressed sadness over the loss of the historic tree but gratitude that no lives were lost. “Efforts are underway to clear the debris and assess the extent of the damage to the vehicles and surrounding property,” the parish stated.
Community Reaction
Residents, especially seniors, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Many reminisced about playing under the tree’s branches and spending time there before or after church activities.
