Controversy Arises Over Allegations of Judicial Bias in De Lima’s Bail Grant

In the wake of former Senator Leila De Lima’s release on bail, her spokesperson has sharply criticized former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque for suggesting potential bias by the judge involved in the case. Roque and former Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre III, both previously part of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s Cabinet, raised concerns over the possibility of bias by the judge who granted De Lima’s bail. This assertion has sparked significant controversy and debate.

Roque’s claim centers on the relationship between the judge, Gener Gito of the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court Branch 206, and De Lima, alleging that Gito was a “favorite student” of De Lima at San Beda College. These allegations were met with strong disapproval from De Lima’s spokesperson, Atty. Dino de Leon, who criticized Roque for casting aspersions on the judiciary’s credibility without any substantial basis.

De Lima, who has been imprisoned for nearly seven years on drug-related charges, was granted bail after the judiciary determined that the evidence against her was not strong enough. Roque, who had previously expressed a desire for De Lima to receive a lifetime of jail time, commented on the bail grant, suggesting that it could lead to impunity for those who lie in court.

This development and the ensuing allegations have intensified the ongoing discourse regarding judicial independence and the rule of law in the Philippines. The situation remains a focal point of public and legal debate, highlighting the complex dynamics of political and judicial interactions in high-profile cases.
